Thinking About Transferring? Start by Callin' Collin
If you’re looking for a transfer-friendly university that will take your goals seriously, Minnesota State Moorhead should be on your radar. Whether you're coming from a two-year community college or another university, the process is smooth and simple.
To help you get a clear picture, we sat down with Collin Bueltel, Assistant Director of Transfer Recruitment. Collin works one-on-one with hundreds of students each year and knows the ins and outs of transferring. Many transfers start by picking up the phone and callin' Collin.
Here are the most common questions Collin hears from prospective transfer students:
How will my credits transfer?
This is the most important question, and it’s one Collin hears nearly every day. “The good news is that we offer preliminary credit evaluations before you apply. You can just send us your unofficial transcripts, and we can see how they apply to the major you are interested in pursuing”
Moorhead also uses , a national network to help explore course equivalencies, program requirements, and applicability of coursework when transferring between schools. If your credits are from a regionally accredited institution, there's a high chance they'll count toward your degree. You’ll get a full, personalized transfer report as soon as you’re admitted.
Is it easy to transfer to Moorhead?
Yes. According to Collin, “The process is built to be simple, not stressful. Most of our students complete the application in under 20 minutes, and we review transfer applications quickly.”
Once you’re admitted, Collin or another dedicated transfer admission representative will help you through each next step so you’re never left wondering what to do next.

Are there transfer agreements or pathways in place?
Yes, and Moorhead will continue to add more! Moorhead has agreements with many community and technical colleges, particularly in Minnesota and North Dakota. There’s a good chance your program has agreements in place to make your credit transfer seamless.
What do current transfer students think of Moorhead?
Great question! Here's an actual testimonial from a student submitted on a third-party college review platform:
"Transferring to Minnesota State Moorhead from a community college was honestly a little scary at first. I wasn’t sure what to expect I worried about fitting in, keeping up, and finding my place. But from the moment I got here, that fear started to fade.
The professors were welcoming and supportive, and I quickly realized they really care about helping students succeed. The perfect class sizes made it easier to ask questions and connect with others, which helped me gain confidence fast.
I got involved in campus life, made friends, and took advantage of hands-on learning and career support. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Moorhead helped me grow in ways I never expected and I’m so glad I took the leap."
How do I register for classes after I’m admitted?
Once you are admitted, someone from the transfer team will be in touch with you on next steps! Once those next steps are completed, we will connect you directly with an academic advisor to get registered.
Who will be my advisor?
In your first advising appointment, you will meet with either the department chair or a program coordinator to get registered for your first semester. Once classes start, you will be assigned an academic advisor, who also is a faculty member in that department. If you're undecided, you’ll work with a general advisor who can help you explore your options. Advisors are trained to support transfer students specifically, and Collin helps make that connection early so you're not left guessing.
Will I live on campus as a transfer student?
While not required, it is highly recommended to live on campus to get the most out of your Dragon experience. Transfer students enjoy some unique benefits when applying for housing, including priority room selection. With a variety of living options ranging from double rooms to upperclass apartments, on-campus housing has something for everyone.
Are there online programs at Moorhead?
Yes. Moorhead offers dozens of fully online degrees and certificates. Many transfer students complete their degrees entirely online, especially in fields like business, operations management, nursing, and education.
“Online students get the same faculty and the same world-class education, with added flexibility for part-time learners” says Collin.
Final Thoughts from Collin
“If you’re even thinking about transferring, let’s talk. You don’t have to have it all figured out. I’m happy to help you see what’s possible, map out a plan, and get you to graduation.”
